In order to prevent carbide precipitation, stainless steel 348 flanges are mainly composed of 18–20% chromium, 9–13% nickel, and titanium added in amounts at least five times the carbon content. About 0.05% carbon is added to the alloy to increase its strength at high temperatures. The tensile strength of SS 348 is roughly 585 MPa, its yield strength is close to 240 MPa, and its elongation is roughly 40%. It has a density of about 8.0 g/cm³. These flanges are appropriate for harsh thermal environments because they have outstanding resistance to oxidation and intergranular corrosion and retain mechanical stability up to 900°C.
